Be Prepared For Food Allergies While At The Cottage This Summer

E-mail Print PDF

Summer get-togethers are always fun, but safety should be paramount, especially when serving food at spontaneous functions like BBQ’s and picnics. Marilyn Allen, a food and anaphylactic consultant, says you have to be ready for people with food allergies and be quick to respond if one flares up.

If you’re hosting an event, you’ll want to ask people if they have food allergies ahead of time. Milk, eggs, peanuts, fish and other seafood, as well as soy, wheat, sesame seeds and mustard are some foods to watch. Also, people with allergies should have an auto injector on hand packed with epinephrine should they need it. From the host’s point of view, you’ll want to read food labels beforehand, so you know what you’re serving.

To learn more about food allergies and the use of epinephrine, visit www.allerject.ca
