THIS JUST IN: Major Funding Announcment For Wellness Centre Project in Port Carling to Happen Friday

Friday will be the day to be in Port Carling. At 1:30pm there will be a major fundraising announcement for the Brock and Willa Wellness Centre project. The Wellness Centre will be located on 13 acres of land on West Street that will eventually house the Port Carling Nursing Station, Andy's House Hospice Centre and the Port Carling Lions Club Seniors Retirement Home. The nursing station will be similar to the Ruth Dare Nursing Station in Rosseau, but larger and will have rooms available on the lower level for special services, such as a diabetes clinic; mental health support; preventive health/exercise, etc. Andy’s House will be a palliative care facility through Hospice Muskoka and will have a family suite, quiet room and specially designed rooms for patients and full time medical staff. From the facility there will also be a view of the water. The Lions Senior Retirement Residence will have a combination of one and two bedroom apartments, of which some will be designated attainable units. There will also be a common room (available for community use as well) with a washroom and small kitchen including fridge, stove, etc. The Seniors Residence will be placed on the property on the side closest to Foodland where residents can easily walk over for groceries. It is the Lions’ hope as well to have a community garden.The public is invited to attend that the announcement on Friday, which will also serve to kick-start fundraising efforts for the new centre.

National Aboriginal Day Eve Event Thursday

Huntsville is joining other communities across Canada to celebrate National Aboriginal Day. Although it's this Friday, the Town has partnered with Huntsville/Lake of Bays Chamber of Commerce to host a Aboriginal Day Eve event at River Mill Park tomorrow. Manager of Arts, Culture and Heritage Teri Souter says it will run from Noon until 2:00pm.

Souter says National Aboriginal Day is a holiday for First Nations, so holding it the day before allows First Nations schools to participate. If you want to attend you'll have to pack a picnic snack and bring your own chairs and blanket.

Border Agency Warns of Telephone Scam

The public is being warned about a possible phone scam, this time involving the Canada Border Services Agency’s Border Information Service. The CBSA says its received reports that people are being called and personal information and payment are being requested over the phone. The agency says the BIS call centre is a free service and it’s not designed to make calls to members of the public for information and payment requests.

Expert Provides Tips For Buying a Used Boat

Not all of us can afford a new boat and when buying used ones you need to be careful. Scott Neil, Kijiji’s Head of Vertical Business has some tips to steer you in the right direction…

When buying a used boat, Neil says you should understand what you need it for. If for leisure time on the lake with friends, a pontoon boat might be right for you, if for waterskiing or fishing, other kinds might be better. Neil suggests getting the boat out on the water for a test run before you buy it. He also suggests having a marine mechanic inspect it to make sure it’s in good shape.

If you see oil leaks around gaskets or that it’s in general ill repair, the boat’s probably been misused and is likely not in great shape.

New Gravenhurst Public School Outdoor Classroom Complete

It’s a great day to learn outside and that’s just what classes at Gravenhurst Public School have started doing. The school’s outdoor classroom is up and running complete with log benches, picnic tables, stone benches and a spot in the shade. Kindergarten student Kenny says so far, there’s been lots to do.

Principal Caroline Pattison says the classroom was created out of a school council meeting so that kids could have a place to gather and discuss or have a lesson.
